Tufts Timmy Global Health, in conjunction with national nonprofit Timmy Global, seeks to “build healthy futures” in profoundly underserved indigenous communities surrounding the city of Xela, Guatemala through medical relief. It is of the utmost importance that our brigade trip to Xela every January is not a finite, annual occurrence but rather is a small piece of something bigger. Our goal is to sustain our impact in these communities and provide them with continuous attention to the best of our abilities. Our fundraising efforts, which subsidize 32 Volcanes, a Xela-based non-profit association that works to strengthen communities through regenerative development programs focused on health, education, and food sovereignty, among other things, provides resources to the communities we work with in our absence. Furthermore, Tufts Timmy is only one of several college chapters that will provide medical attention and relief to these same communities throughout the course of the year. This sustainable model is what makes Timmy unique. It allows our efforts to resonate in a way that the work of most medical brigades does not. Finally, we believe that our story is one that should be shared. It is key to build a narrative to share within the Tufts community as well as in the greater Medford and Somerville communities. By sharing our experience, we garner support and spread the stories of the people that we seek to serve.
